A Valentine message from God

There is a lot of mystery that surrounds the original meaning of Valentine’s Day.  There could be as many as three different people called St. Valentine.  The holiday is most often associated with a priest from the third century.  Claudius III was in power at the time and believed that single men made better soldiers –  so the emperor decided to pass an edict forbidding young men to marry.  Tradition says that Valentine refused to follow the emperor’s edict, and performed many marriages.  When Claudius III found out about Valentine’s disregard for his law, he had the priest captured, placed in prison and eventually killed.  Another tradition states that while Valentine was in prison he fell in love with the jailer’s daughter, wrote her a note and signed it, “Love from your Valentine.”

I’m not sure where tradition parts with truth but the story has been popular.  Each February more than 250 million valentines are given away in celebration of love, friendship and family.  But what if God sent those he loved a Valentine?

This is a Valentine to you from the One who loves you with a perfect, eternal love.  He is your Heavenly Father, your Creator.  There is no one who would want to say “I love you” today more than God.  So what is God’s Valentine message to you today?  Enjoy reading his expressions of love for you, and consider passing them on to others who need to know how much they are loved and cared about on this special day.

“God loves you as though you are the only person in the world,
and he loves everyone the way he loves you.”

St. Augustine of Hippo
