Many acts of kindness, one act of evil, and the LIght of the World

I had planned a much different blog post for today, but as I sit here typing, I realize that God’s thoughts and plans are often not our own.  First, let me thank you all for sending your “acts of kindness” to my last blog post.  It did my heart good to read your stories, see your votes and know that people were out there showing God’s love to others.  I had four winners due to a third-place tie, T. Kennedy, Debra W., Bob K., and Gail W.  I will be contacting each of these readers to see who they would like me to send the Felix Navidad books to.  Thank you for sharing your stories and your examples with all of us.  We were blessed by your words.

But truthfully, I questioned the timing at first.

A few hours after I sent out that blog post, with my silly Christmas horse, our world was interrupted by the news.  The talk shows didn’t spend time discussing holiday fashions or gift ideas.  There were no demonstrations about how to decorate cupcakes for Christmas or tie a perfect bow on a holiday gift.  Isn’t it strange how a few moments can change the world?  But, sometimes a few moments is all it takes.  That was true for Connecticut – but it was also true for the people who were the recipients of your gifts of kindness.  Just a few moments…and you demonstrated the light of Christ to a world that had grown very dark.  My thanks to all of you for being living reminders to the question our world was asking.  What should we do when evil things happen?  We should be God’s light in the darkness.

This will be my last blog post before Christmas.  My family is celebrating early this year.  This is a joyful Christmas as I celebrate with my husband, my two sons and their two brides.  I have so much to be thankful for this year.   I hope you have received or downloaded the Advent Book from our ministry.  If not, you can find it on the home page of my web site.  You will find my Christmas wishes for you there.  And I mean every word.  But for today, I wanted to send you a poem, attributed to a woman in Pennsylvania, because this Christmas – we need to continue to give acts of kindness.  This Christmas we have so many families to pray for…and those prayers may be the most crucial acts of kindness we will give this year.

twas’ 11 days before Christmas, around 9:38
when 20 beautiful children stormed through heaven’s gate.
their smiles were contagious, their laughter filled the air.
they could hardly believe all the beauty they saw there.
they were filled with such joy, they didn’t know what to say.
they remembered nothing of what had happened earlier that day.
“where are we?” asked a little girl, as quiet as a mouse.
“this is heaven.” declared a small boy.
“we’re spending Christmas at God’s house.”
when what to their wondering eyes did appear,
but Jesus, their savior, the children gathered near.
He looked at them and smiled, and they smiled just the same.
then He opened His arms and He called them by name.
and in that moment was joy, that only heaven can bring
those children all flew into the arms of their King
and as they lingered in the warmth of His embrace,
one small girl turned and looked at Jesus’ face.
and as if He could read all the questions she had
He gently whispered to her, “I’ll take care of mom and dad.”
then He looked down on earth, the world far below
He saw all of the hurt, the sorrow, and woe
then He closed His eyes and He outstretched His hand,
“Let My power and presence re-enter this land!”
“may this country be delivered from the hands of fools”
“I’m taking back my nation. I’m taking back my schools!”
then He and the children stood up without a sound.
“come now my children, let me show you around.”
excitement filled the space, some skipped and some ran.
all displaying enthusiasm that only a small child can.
and i heard Him proclaim as He walked out of sight,
“in the midst of this darkness, I AM STILL THE LIGHT.”

And may all of us continue to show his light – through our love, in the coming year.  It was dark that first Christmas too.  But the glory of the Lord shone all around.  There was good news of great joy for ALL the people – unto us, a Son is given.  I wish you a blessed Christmas!
